Modern Love

Spring 2021

Mock identity system for local DJ and dance party collective Modern Love. Up until recently, Modern Love hosted regular dance parties in the New Haven area. Featuring local artists and creating safe, inclusive spaces for all, the parties became popular among Yale students and local New Haveners alike. In designing a mock identity system for Modern Love, I set out to create a flexible system that could be adapted to each of their diverse events.

At its core the system revolves, quite literally, around the turntable mark. The inner circle of the vinyl can be replaced by any of the rounded letter forms of Neue Kabel and rotated within acceptable parameters to ensure readability. The three colors used in the system are intended to be pulled from images created by or for the performing artist(s), with high enough contrast for visibility. The choices of colors, letters to include in iterations of the mark, and rotation angles give the event organizers and local artists ample opportunity to experiment while still remaining recognizable as Modern Love. As I produced this system during some of the worst of the Covid pandemic, the applications shown here are purely digital but could easily be expanded to include stickers, wallpaper, vinyl records, etc.; the physical possibilities are endless. I produced this design system for the class Advanced Graphic Design. All assets were produced in Adobe Illustrator, the wireframe in Adobe XD, and the loading GIF in Adobe After Effects.
