California Prison System
Spring 2021
Series of narrative posters visualizing the startling growth of the prison system in California and its damaging and isolating effects on residents of the state, especially Black residents. As the list of prisons established in the state grows exponentially over time in the posters, the list physically separates two transcribed letters. The letters were exchanged between Edmond Richardson and Adamu Chan, two friends who met while incarcerated together in the San Quentin State Prison. Adamu has since been released and is living in the Bay Area, which he describes as a sort of prison in itself.
The separation is furthered by the juxtaposition of two series of photographs, the top taken from inside San Quentin, photographer unknown, and the bottom taken around Bay Area suburbia by photographer Mimi Plumb. I designed this series for the class Advanced Graphic Design. The posters were designed and laid out in Adobe InDesign.
